Hillside estate

Project Description

Situated on a hilltop overlooking a panoramic valley view in the northern Appalachians, this farmhouse will serve as permanent homestead for a young, growing family.  Critical among project goals are space provisions for hosting large gatherings and capturing dramatic views.  Drawing inspiration from historic “Pennsylvania Dutch” farmhouses, the front elevation welcomes guests with a pair of stone gatehouses, entry porch, and symmetry of modestly proportioned windows.  A move to the opposite side of the home reveals less restraint.  Lap siding is peeled away, allowing generous windows to take in abundant light and views of the rear yard and valley beyond.  Balancing the airy entertaining rooms, smaller spaces throughout provide an opportunity for quiet family retreat.  Examples include a cozy screened porch and fireplace nestled between two exterior wings, a breakfast banquette with its own corner window view, a hidden playroom, and an office tucked behind the main stairway.
